Description
The Ultimate Fighting Championship (Russian Absolute Fighting Championship) is a sports organization based in Las Vegas, USA, and conducting mixed martial arts (also known as MMA - from the English Mixed Martial Arts) fights around the world. Initially, the UFC was conceived by the creators as a one-time tournament to determine the most effective martial art, and was reminiscent of the early Brazilian vale tudo competitions. The success of the first tournament, held in Denver in 1993, motivated new competitions, but under pressure from the state of Nevada, the company had to significantly change the rules, turning the competition from a spectacle into a sport.
In 2001, following the acquisition by Station Casinos owners Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta and the appointment of former boxing promoter Dana White as president of the organization, the UFC began an aggressive expansion into the United States and other countries.
Since 2006, UFC tournaments (due to the cancellation of official tournament brackets, now known as events or events from the English event) have been a significant competitor to professional boxing on pay television, the number of pay broadcast orders often exceeds 1,000,000. In 2007, after the buyout main competitor, the Japanese organization Pride Fighting Championships, the UFC has become one of the world's largest promoters of mixed martial arts fights.
As of 2012, most of the world's top MMA fighters perform under the auspices of the UFC, and fights are broadcast in 130 countries in 20 different languages.
